Coloring Book: December

I have to admit as a child one of my favorite things to do was color with my mom. She treated me to one of those hefty 64 color crayon boxes and we would each pick a page. She would outline the shape with more weight of color and then lightly fill in the inside. I’m sure at some point I probably scrawled over lines and shapes in a blur of color. But her style left an impression. My mom’s careful hand and stroke of the crayon would have me transfixed, watching her hand move in accord with the printed image.

A cousin I love has a child I adore who we will call Baby Boy. We had the great opportunity of having him participate in our wedding in the role of ringbearer. He knows me by face even though he lives far away and smiles when he hears my name. I like to think I made a good impression on him the first few times we met . His typical response when his mama says my name is, “dulce!” If you speak Spanish, you know that means candy. I don’t know WHERE in the world he got that idea from… BUT let it be known that if he thinks of me and the word for sweet is conjured up, I’m not upset. There are many other words that would be less tantalizing as nicknames. And a Dr. Pepper is a good thing to waste…

I’ve decided to embark on a new adventure. This sometimes hits me best in the wee hours where night and morning coalesce.  Baby boy lives in a republic far from the bridge that is golden and so as part of my Christmas gift to him, I am drawing (and sharing with you too) a coloring book from scratch. Every month, a new page to print out and color. My kind of fun and a collection of the history of now in black outline. Merry Christmas to you and you and you and…
